Tkvarcheli Railway Station

Wissenswertes

Facts

This highly decayed train station in Tkvarcheli (Georgian: ტყვარჩელი, Abkhazian: Тҟәарчал / Tquartschal and Russian: Ткварчели) was part of the 221 km long railway line along the Black Sea coast. During the Georgian-Abkhazian war, numerous sections of the route were destroyed and many of the grand station buildings were damaged. The outbuildings seen in the gallery were used to load the coal that was mined in the mountains above Tkvarcheli. See: Mining Town Akarmara, Mining Town Gorn’acky, and Mining Town Polyana. The coal was transported from Tkvarcheli to various areas in Georgia and Russia. Today, the railroad tracks are overgrown and the loading stations and other station buildings have largely collapsed.
